The semester is underway and congratulations to the St Leo’s Students’ Club for running what was another superb week of welcome and orientation at the College. The highlights of the week included the inaugural Bright and Blue party, hosted on Sunday night 21 July. All proceeds were donated to Beyond Blue as part of the 2019 Students’ Club Exec’s commitment to addressing men’s mental health and those stigmas surrounding it. In second semester 2019, St Leo’s has in fact got more residents in-house than it had in semester 1. Applications for 2020 are open and already we are experiencing demand in excess of what we’d anticipated.
Have a look at our Facebook page, expertly administered by Second Year Rep Ged Moriarty. In pictures it’ll walk you through the fun and glamour of the College Ball – in 2019, aptly called Surviball – of the Fittest, and the excellent activities convened by the Students’ Club as residents settled back into College for second semester. The 2019 College ball was at Darling Co. Paddington, a most outstanding venue.
It’s also timely that the College acknowledge the work of the St Leo’s Council, led by Mr Daryl Hanly OAM. Each semester, the College Council convenes with Leo’s resident student leaders and works with them to arrive at the residents’ wishes, ambitions and aspirations for the College. We concluded that day of strategic planning and reflection on Saturday 20 July and from it we have distilled some excellent ideas for how we might consolidate our strengths, refine our offerings and stride boldly and confidently into the future.
Congratulations to all Leonians on an excellent semester 1. We concluded first semester with a GPA over 5, with results in our mix including straight 7s. Tutorials begin soon. University is about preparation for the world beyond academia. Later this semester, the Students’ Club President, Tyson Flamsteed and I will be travelling to Canberra to have our photograph taken with the three former Leonians currently serving in the Australian parliament. The Leo’s balance of power.
I’m looking forward to what promises to be an exciting semester 2.
Dominus Illuminatio Mea.
