Archbishop Mark Coleridge of Brisbane has appointed Madonna King as chair of St Leo’s Council.
Madonna has been deputy chair of St Leo’s - one of only two all-male residential university colleges in Australia - for the past two years.
An award-winning journalist and author, Madonna’s last five books have explored challenges faced by teens and young adults as they navigate a world very different from their parents’.
Madonna is an alumna of the University of Queensland, moving from Dalby to Duchesne College, the women’s Catholic residence, located next to St Leo’s College.
Professor Justin Cooper-White, executive dean (interim) of the UQ Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and IT has been appointed deputy chair.
Archbishop Coleridge has also announced two new appointments to the council, to fill vacancies left by outgoing chair Daryl Hanly and Robert Falzon.
Mr Edward Goodwin KC, a former resident of St Leo’s, will join the council, along with Ann Rebgetz, principal of St James College in Brisbane.
“It’s a terrific opportunity, and I look forward to progressing the work of the council as we move further and further away from a pandemic that challenged almost all that we do,’’ Madonna said.
“St Leo’s offers young men the opportunity to live on campus, access tutoring and a host of other college offerings, and to develop relationships that last a lifetime. It’s a privilege for the council to be part of that journey with them.’’
Archbishop Coleridge thanked outgoing chair Daryl Hanly for his outstanding stewardship, and council member Robert Falzon for his service over many years.
