This year we have two Academic Scholarship holders – Tim Harris from Shalom College in Bundaberg and Dominic McMahon from Xavier Catholic College in Hervey Bay.
Tim completed an Enhanced Studies Program at UQ even before he began his studies here and achieved a distinction in Calculus and Linear Algebra. This comes as no surprise given Tim was a very high achieving student in maths and science subjects while still at school.
On top of this Tim is a champion chess player and has helped the St Leo’s team to victory in the ICC Chess competition this semester.
During the mid-semester break Tim competed in the International Masters competition in Brisbane and came joint sixth. He played against previous Australian champions – Stephen Solomon and Aleksander Wohl.
Additionally Tim has been part of the first XI cricket team at Leo’s.
Tim has a very bright future and we are delighted he has chosen to make St Leo’s his home for the next few years.
Tim is pictured above at the competition which took place at Churchie school in east Brisbane.
Here he is taking on Emmanuel College during the ICC Chess Comp - representing St Leo's:
Another maths and science guru is Dominic McMahon who has been studying a Bachelor of Science which has included some maths, physics and chemistry subjects. In the long term his plan is to take his provisional spot in medicine once he finishes his first degree.
Here at Leo's Dom played fresher rugby which was his first proper crack at union. He thoroughly enjoyed the season and the other teams they played against.
Dom is getting amongst as part of Team UQ and playing hockey for UQ along with a few other Leo's boys who also play for the club.
All this plus a part time job is keeping Dominic pretty busy but he is definitely enjoying his time at university and St Leo's.
Stay safe, enjoy the break and we look forward to welcoming our new residents next year!
