Rethink Program Educates a New Group of Leonians

February 27, 2018

For the third year all first year Residents took part in our Rethink Program alongside women from Grace College.

The day includes workshops run by experts brought into St Leo’s and Grace to highlight important respect-based messages.

Respectful Relationships

The Pillow Talk Project considers sexual wellbeing and ethical behaviour. This interactive workshop allows participants to discuss and share opinions in a safe space. Subjects discussed were as diverse as alcohol, gender norms, cultural values and the law.

Consent, Get It Right

The concept of what consent is, how it can be given, when it can be given and when it cannot are all examined. The theme of ethical sex underwrites the discussion of how a relationship can proceed with clear communication and mutual understanding.

This workshop is led by two former Residents of our Colleges, St Leo’s and Grace, each of whom now works in their respective Colleges directly with the Residents.

Alcohol, Drugs and Consent

Presented by a police officer with over 30 years’ experience, this workshop offers  first-hand details of the alcohol consumption habits of young people before, during and after events. This session covers the pre-loading culture and the correlation between blood alcohol levels prior to going out and the consequences which often arise – such as sexual assault. Advice is offered on ‘planned drinking’ such as buddies and designated drivers.

Respect. Now. Always.

Respect. Now. Always. is a national campaign aiming to raise awareness of sexual assault and sexual harassment in Australian Universities. As a result of the Australian Human Rights Commission report published in 2017, there are recommendations which relate directly to residential colleges.

LGBTI Awareness and Inclusion

LGBTI identifying people face unique challenges. This workshop seeks to explore those with a particular emphasis on building relationships and networks in a tertiary context. Advice is given about comments and behaviours which might arise and how to thoughtfully respond to them.

Additionally the LGBTI terminology is explored so participants can understand what each letter means as well as acquiring a good understanding of the difference between gender identity, sexual orientation and intersex status.

Our Residents have expressed gratitude about being offered the opportunity to explore these topics in a safe environment. Plans are being developed to set up more sessions at mid-year in order to explore the Residents’ experiences to date following one semester at College.
